Here it is: I turn 29 in less than three weeks. Every week from 29 to 30 I will endeavour to do a new thing … and I need your help. I used up all my creative thinking power already, writing the play that must not be spoken of, and the thesis that can not be written. So – suggest things in the comments on this page. Simple, right? You suggest ‘em, I’ll blog ‘em. Here’s a list to get things started:

- Eat kangaroo meat

- Get acupuncture (good god, I am so scared of needles)

- Drill a hole in a brick wall (only brick will do!)

- Make a herb garden

- Catch a fish

- Make a functional raft and paddle it across the river

- Write a message in a bottle and throw it into the sea

- Make pasta from scratch

- Get a manicure

- Learn a magic trick

You get the idea. Suggest away. Don’t leave me hanging.

AND NOW!! The list of Things I’ve Done:

  1. cartoon-yoghurt-bottle.jpgThe Warm-Up: Yoghurt Drink
  2. New One: Birthday Croquet
  3. New Two: Wave and Research

I’m writing this on behalf of Lt. Lucky, who gave me (amongst other things) exactly what I wanted for my birthday: a list of suggestions for new thing to do. Enclosed in my birthday card:
    - Watch the sunrise and sunset in one day.
    - Visit an old people’s home. Chat to someone lonely.
    - Invent something brilliant.
    - Take a class in some kind of martial art.
    - Give as many genuine compliments as possible for a day.
    - Take a photo of a neighbour’s pet. Photoshop it and post it to them anonymously.
    - Send someone fan mail/write a letter to the editor.
    - Go sailing/windsurfing.
    - Volunteer your time for a worthy cause. (Already done, but there’s no reason I can’t pick a NEW worthy cause).
    - Go to a new restaurant. Order cake as a meal.
    - Build a gigantic sand castle.
    - Have a picnic at Araluen.
    - Get Bowen therapy.
    - Go to a horse show/event (Rodeo, Dressage).
    - Give a busker a $10 note.
    - Tell someone who is at work they are doing a great job.
    - Walk through every door backwards for a day.
    - Substitute a made-up word for the word ‘I’ during conversation.
    - Go tenpin bowling, each bowl must be made through the legs, backwards, and be followed by saying “Who’s your daddy?” whilst making shooting actions with fingers.
    - Order something, pay, take your product and change and moonwalk away from the counter.
    - Sleep under the stars in a sleeping bag in your backyard.
    - Take lunch and catch buses to new places.
    - Wear an outfit inside out all day.
    - Dress up as your favourite book character. Stay in character all day.
    - Have an “All about Cpt. Day”. Eat your favourite food, wear your favourite clothes, and do your favourite things.
    - Change accents at whim.

Question, For your years journey do you want to do physical things, (Hiking climbing swimming) or learn something new, improve your mind,or develop a new skill or set goals to achieve? First suggestion is get a book on mind mapping and develop your years list. My problem would be how would i keep the list to 52….. Good luck and have a great year

    Hi Barney,
Thanks for the good lucks, and your suggestion.
After thinking about it a bit more, I’d like my new things to be another way to get my mind beyond the daily academic grind, so I guess a combination of go-out-and-do-things and new skills (to add to welding, balloon animal making, and origami) with a dash of spontaneity and more incentive to do things I would never normally do because I’m a big scaredy-pants.

At 29 and academic grind suggests several things for example Late starter, Post grad (Masters) or PHD. I make a deal with you, tell me what you do or are doing and where you live in Australia and i will post you 20 mad brain ideas to break the grind. By the way, beauty is a concept within the individual, and not in the object, to be scared is not in the spider or idea etc, to be scared comes from within. Be at peace within and being a scaredy pants goes away. Next idea learn about colour and light and art. Buy a second hand art book, cut out 52 picture and for one day each week have a picture next to the computer or on the fridge door and pause and look at it. What do you see? what new insight do you learn….. the 29th year has started and you are now counting down…..
